Segmented Downloading

GetRight's Segmented Downloading

If there are several servers where a file can be downloaded, GetRight can "segment" the file and download different pieces from different servers at the same time. For some Internet connections, this can dramatically improve the speed of the file download.

Q: Why does GetRight limit to two connections per server?
Q: Why "only" 6 connections per file?
Q: Segmented Downloading doesn't make any difference for me...
Q: "Cancel This Segment" can make the colors go different.
Q: The Pause/Resume button flickers back and forth sometimes.

Q: Why does GetRight limit to two connections per server?
  • The potential problem is if many GetRight users started using many connections to the same file on the same server. If that happened, many server administrators would simply ban GetRight completely so GetRight wouldn't work to download any file from that server. (And Yes they can take other less drastic actions like limiting connections per IP address...but usually do some kind of banning anyway, whether it's just your address, or a program like GetRight in general.)
To avoid allowing any "abusing" of servers, GetRight will only allow one connection to a server for a file.

  • Q: Why "only" 6 connections per file?
  • Seemed like a nice round number. 4.2 does increase this limit from 4 to 6.

  • Q: Segmented Downloading doesn't make any difference for me...
  • It is not guaranteed to help everybody and all situations. Segmented Downloading can help you reach the speed at which your modem is connected...but nothing beyond that (it won't turn a 28.8kb modem into a 56kb modem!) And it doesn't always make sense...if you have many files in your list, it is just as good to get the most out of your modem if you download several files at the same time. Segmented downloading is most useful if there is a file you really want to get as fast as possible.
  • The results of Segmented Downloading will vary depending on your Internet connection, your ISP and their connection to the Internet, the servers you're downloading from, and just the Internet in general. For many users, if you are not reaching the download speed at which your modem is connected, Segmented downloading can really help.
  • And if downloading normally can usually hit close to the maximum rate of your modem, it may not be obvious that it is helping. For me, downloads would often hit around the maximum rate, but vary a bit close to the maximum. With Segmented downloading, GetRight was much better at contantly hitting that maximum and not seeing the little dips in speed.
  • The worse your Internet connection, the more Segmented downloading can help your speeds.

  • Q: "Cancel This Segment" can make the colors go different.
  • Yep. The first one is colored Green, the second Purple, etc. If one is stopped, the other in progress segments shift around to fill the spaces, but the original colors aren't saved, so there can be a new first one (Green), etc. The file will be fine, just the progress display shows different colors. Stopping the first one will cause more shifting (and color changes) than stopping the last one. Probably will be fixed in one of the next versions.

  • Q: The Pause/Resume button flickers back and forth sometimes.
  • This can happen when files are first starting to connect. Once files are going, it should stick at the "Pause" version. Doesn't cause any known problems, just changes back and forth.
